Concrete in the Kitchen - Kitchen, Dining & Bar Counters
Our custom decorative concrete overlays bond to your existing
kitchen counter materials including formica and tile for
example. No demolition is necessary -- saving you time and money
while achieving a high-end custom look designed to harmonize
with your decor. We can change contours, texture the edges or
extend your backsplashes to the bottom of the cabinets. Or, if
you prefer, we can fabricate and overlay new MDF counters for
you. Or we can build custom forms and cast a unique concrete
countertop for you.
Bar at Gomez's Mexican Restaurant
The kitchen and breakfast bar counters above were fabricated in MDF. This kitchen was totally remodeled along with the rest of the condo. The homeowner and designer chose a contemporary slim 3/4" edge and spring green coloration to contrast with the earthy colors used throughout. The homeowner also had a coordinating vanity countertop and a contrasting pellet stove surround and hearth made with decorative concrete overlay. This kitchen counter was originally fabricated with MDF. The homeowner chose a total kitchen remodel with new cabinets and appliances. The kitchen was part of the newly redesigned great room, so the coloring was selected to coordinated with the homeowners chosen new fabrics and cabinet stain. The decorative concrete backsplash extends to the bottom of the cabinets and the counter edge is rock-textured and 2.25 inches thick.
The homeowner also chose to have the woodstove surround, hearth and entry floor done in a decorative concrete overlay to coordinate. This kitchen counter was origially orange Formica. The existing wide contemporary square-edge and backsplash contours were followed.
The homeowner chose to redo the cultured marble bath vanities in the same finish as the kitchen counters. The homeowner also chose to cover the entry hall, kitchen and bath floors with a custom diagonally oriented pattern, texture and coordinating coloring. The floors were originally brick, vinyl, and concrete. You can see a bit of the hall floor on the left side in the photo.
The counter above was originally formica. The homeowner chose the decorative concrete coating to coordinate with the existing cabinets, flooring and living room carpet for aesthetic reasons. The homeowner also installed a brand new porcelain self-rimming sink. This kitchen counter was originally blue formica with the predictable curved front edge and backsplash. The edges were squared off for a sleeker more contemporary look and the front edges were textured. The existing sink with its metal rim was left in place, except that the metal rim was also coated with cement to provide the sleek look of an undermount sink. (the porcelain sink - sans rim - can be seen in the lower left corner of photo)
The homeowner chose the decorative concrete coating colored in light earthy tones to coordinate with the existing cabinets, flooring and dining room carpet for aesthetic reasons.
This restaurant bar counter was originally black granite tiles with a wooden edge. Because the tiles were uneven, glassware was chipping when the bartender slid the glassware across the bar to the customers. The terracotta, antique white and dark brown coloring was chosen to coordinate with the Mexican pavers and dark wood bar base

FAQ. Is it better to apply
the decorative concrete overlay to my existing counter or should
a new counter be fabricated first?
|
If you are keeping your existing
cabinets
If your counter material is sound, not delaminating and has no
water damage and
If you do not want to make major changes to the shape of your
counters.
Then a decorative concrete
overlay over your existing material is an excellent choice.
If you are replacing your
cabinets and have to tear everything out anyway, a custom
fabricated MDF counter with a decorative concrete overlay is
probably a better choice and provides many more options for
unique sizes, shapes and contours. In this event you can
also consider a cast concrete counter with or without and
integral sink and/or drain board.
